Accommodation
Renting

It is common to rent residential accommodation in the Netherlands. Tenants are usually expected to pay one month's rent as a deposit. This deposit is returned at the end of their tenancy. A period of notice of at least one month is obligatory. Tenants enjoy good statutory protection in the Netherlands. If you doubt whether the rent you are paying is correct, you can contact one of the 62 rent committees.

Buying

Information on mortgages can be obtained from banks or other mortgage lenders and/or mortgage advisers. Mortgages are generally entered into for a duration of 30 years in the Netherlands, although other periods are also possible. You are entitled to tax relief on your mortgage interest payments.

When buying property in the Netherlands, you are required to pay six percent transfer tax to the state of the Netherlands.

When you buy a new property, you are not required to pay any transfer tax.
