Public Holidays in the Netherlands

A calendar of the national vacation days when businesses, schools and banks holiday and people get the day off in Holland. With links to holidays in the UK and the US.
The Dutch word for bank holiday/public holiday/legal holiday is feestdag
  • Banks and shops are closed on public holidays and public transport is limited
  • Police stations and hospitals do not close
  • Public holidays that fall on a weekend are not forwarded. However, certain companies may choose to take this holiday on the previous Friday or the following Monday

10 April Good Friday/Goede Vrijdag. National holiday, government offices and schools close; many businesses remain open
12 April Easter Sunday/Paasdag 
13 April Easter Monday/Tweede Paasdag
30 April Queen’s Birthday/Koninginnedag (Thursday)
21 May Ascension Day/Hemelvaartsdag (Thursday)
4 May Remembrance Day/Dodenherdenking (Monday). Two minutes silence observed at 20:00
5 May Liberation Day/Bevrijdingsdag (Tuesday). Celebrated every year but a public holiday only every five years: next 2010
1 June  Whit Monday/Pentecost/Pinksterdag
25 December Christmas Day/Eerste Kerstdag/Kerstmis (Friday)
26 December  Second Day of Christmas/Tweede Kerstdag (Saturday)

Note: 5 December (Sinterklaas), although not a public holiday, is widely observed as the day when Sinterklaas (a Santa Claus/Father Christmas-like character) gives presents to children.
