e-mail miken | Hi, I'm looking to make the move to Holland and I would like to know if there is a big difference in the cost of living between the UK and Holland? Are food prices comparable? Are living costs comparable? i.e. rent, rates, heating etc... thanks in advance for any info. Mike

I struggle to get my weekly shop up to 50 euros a week and that's feeding a family of 5! The Dutch pay 52% tax so they have to keep the cost of living down. I can't comment on heating, what is the average cost of a 3 bed house in the UK? If you tell me that then I can perhaps give you a comparrison. |

I think we spend about 100 a week but that includes going to different shops, you can't buy everything in just one shop. If you do to the greengrocer you pay twice as much. Let's not forget about petrol, that is really expensive here, about 1,33 a litre. When I was back in the UK for the summer it was about 99p in Sainsbury's. |

Food, I would say is much more than in UK, there I used to spend £250 a month, and here 500 euros or so (and quality is worse here).
Electric/gas/phone - much more expensive here
Council tax cheaper here
Road tax - much more expensive here (triple cost)
Petrol - more expensive
Flowers - cheaper!!!
good luck

Eating out here is expensive, when I was back in the UK recently you could get a pub meal for a fiver and an Indian meal for about the same. We have stopped having Indian takeaway here now as it was working out to be nearly 60 euros a time, once you added on the extra naan bread and bahjees!
I was able to get petrol at 99p a litre in the Tesco near Ashford before we got on the tunnel. Today, in Holland it was 1.36 a litre!
Agree about the flowers, they are really cheap but you can't eat them! |
